Day 12: Sat 31 Aug - Cape Town

9-24 deg C, a lovely warm day
Walk: 9km

Congress registration activation day today. Scan the QR code, print your name badge, attach lanyard, receive congress bag, job done. Saw a few other MEPS members at the registration desk so stopped for a bit of a chat. Back to the hotel for more admin.

About 11:30am Ann, Ulf and I went for a walk to see the streets of Cape Town. Ulf had been told that Loop and Long streets are the safest during the day, but to exercise caution at night, and not to stray too far from those streets. Well, we found ourselves in a not so salubrious part of town in trying to get to the Castle of Good Hope, the location of our MEPS dinner on Thursday night. We eventually made it there but couldn't get any really good photos. It was easier to get back to the hotel from the Castle than it was to get there from the city.

Back at the hotel, I had a bit of downtime, including a 15 min nap. We met downstairs for dinner and happy hour at 5:30pm. Jane and Sylvain only got back from their meeting about 6:30pm after attending the Presidents Happy Hour.

An early night for all. We have to be at the Congress Centre about 2:20pm for a 3pm start tomorrow.

On a positive note, Peter arrived and is safely ensconced in his room for the night.

Day 11: Fri 30 Aug - Cape Town

5-20 deg C, cool to start with, finishing to a warm afternoon, with only a light jumper required
Walk: 9km

After breakfast, we walked the 450m to the Red HOHO Bus stop at the Convention Centre and did a loop. One of the stops is at Table Mountain Cable Car lower station. However, it is closed for maintenance until 1 Sep. So, the bus took up Signal Hill drive to see Lions Head, Signal Hill and Table Mountain views. We got off here for a wander and a few selfies.

Back on the bus, we didn't get off until the stop the bus first departs from. We then walked to the area we had lunch yesterday and chose the Kapstadt Brauhaus. The menu was still a bit yuppy, but the service was BAD. Long story short - two wait staff were fighting over who should be serving us, and doing it in front of us. Then when my food came out, it was not what I ordered, so the boy (second waiter) blamed the girl (first waiter) for taking the incorrect order. We knew she was not to blame as she read it back to us. And then they tried to add a R40 gratuity to the bill as he stated that for tables of five pax or more, they automatically add the gratuity. The tip we really wanted to give was "don't blame each other in front of paying customers. We eventually ended up paying R20 (equivalent of AUD2, so not a huge tip), and it was only after agreeing to pay this that Sylvain read the fine print on the docket that said that the gratuity was automatically added for tables of eight pax or more. Grrrr.....

Back to the hotel to do some more MEPS admin. The hotel has a happy hour from 5-7pm where you pay for one and get two, and if you buy a beer, your free drink is the same beer. Sylvain and I shared a red wine order. While Jane and Sylvain went to the FIP Council dinner, the rest of us did not have dinner as we were still full from lunch. More chasing of MEPS members for information, then watching a weird movie called Battleship.

Had to take this shot - Happy Hippo cafe

Bo-kaap area of Cape Town, formerly known as they Malay Quarter. Known for its brightly coloured homes and cobblestone streets, it is a multicultural neighbourhood, with 50% identifying as Muslim. The area is reported to contain the largest concentration of pre-1850s architecture in South Africa, and is the oldest surviving residential neighbourhood in Cape Town.

Day 10: Thu 29 Aug - Cape Town

4-11 deg C, a beautiful sunny day, a few clouds, with a light breeze
Walk: 7km

A new bed, new room, and no double-glazed windows made for a less than ideal sleep. I probably got more than I thought though.

After breakfast, I met Ulf in the lobby area, so chatted for a while, then agreed to meet up again after Sylvain arrived. After Sylvain had settled in, the three of us went for a walk to the wharf precinct or V&A Waterfront, named after Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, members of the British Royal family when Cape Town was part of the Cape Colony. Alfred, while serving in the British Royal Navy, visited Cape Town and ordered construction of a new harbour for the colony. There is a mix of businesses, shops, eateries, hotels, museums, conference venues and historical landmarks. We wandered around till the worms started biting and eventually settled at La Parada VA Waterfront. Of course the food was a bit yuppie'ish, but it was filling. A slow wander back to the hotel, where we agreed to meet at 5pm for dinner.

Dinner was had at Maccas about 500m south of our location. Cheeseburger tasted the same but the ships had a different taste - maybe a different type of oil. Well fed, we wandered back and had a post-dinner drink in my room.

After the boys left, I did some more MEPS admin before turning out the light about 9:30pm.
